Rezoning approval sought to start work on Kings Cross hotel development

The City of Sydney is set to determine a planning proposal that could pave the way for a 17-room luxury hotel and dining precinct to be built on the site of a former Kings Cross nightclub.

The proposal would see a site at Brougham St, Potts Point move from residential-only use to hotel use. The request from developer Harphill Pty Ltd. has been placed on public exhibition.

The Department of Planning and Environment has given the council oversight of the proposal.

If the City of Sydney approves the proposal, it will enable the development application to be determined.

The developers vision is to create a multi-use accommodation venue with food and drink premises. To move ahead with the $22.3 million plans, they need zoning approval.

Apart from a 17-room hotel, there will be upper-level dining and function facilities as well as ground floor retail across six amalgamated buildings on the block.

An internal enclosed courtyard would round out the development.

No change would occur to the Piccadilly Hotel’s facade and interior as they are heritage listed, however lots at 165-167 Victoria St and 92-98 Brougham St are not.

The height of building or amount of development allowed on the land will also remain intact according to council documents.

The development is in line with the council’s plans to support economic growth through “encouraging hotel use in suitable locations”.

The revitalisation of a post pandemic Kings Cross is a key focus of the Potts Point Partnership and Committee for Sydney.

Consultation closes August 9.
