Marrickville café accused of job ad discrimination

A Sydney coffee shop has come under fire for a “dodgy” Facebook job ad.

The listing for a full-time barista at Marrickville’s Freepour Espresso received enormous backlash for only taking female applicants.

The ad also called for a recent photo within the application.

The venue has been accused of discrimination.

The ad read: "Hiring a female full-time barista/all rounder to join our team. If you feel this position is suitable, please send: 1. Your resume 2. Available time 3. Recent photo 4. Photo of your latte art".

The social media backlash was swift.

One Redditer claimed "gender bias", while others agreed it was "very unprofessional".

"Yeeeeeah super dodge. Probably illegal," one person commented.

"But why delay the inevitable looks-judging-panel? You know all employees are judged for their appearance at the interview," another wrote.

It is illegal in Australia to discriminate based on gender.

The Workplace Gender Equality Agency states, it is "unlawful to advertise positions specifically for women or men, or to discriminate on the basis of sex (Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth))" in Australia.

"Gender-coded language in job advertisements may not only deter individual women from applying for certain jobs, it can also reinforce wider social beliefs about who ‘belongs’ in those jobs and who does not.”

The café was contacted for comment by Yahoo News but is yet to hear back.
