There’s been a massive sigh of relief from pub, club and live music venue owners across Sydney after the NSW government changed said it would change its noise complaint regulations.

Any venue under the umbrella of NSW Liquor and Gaming will now have a five-complaint grace before being forced to shut their doors.

Premier Chris Minns said the changes are “another step in removing the nanny state restrictions, the red tape that have really stifled the vibrancy, the life and the fun out of Sydney for the past 10 years.”

Minns was referring to the one complaint rule that would see venues have to shut their doors as well as lockdown laws during the pandemic that crippled Sydney’s nightlife.

The change to the regulations sees noise complaint management streamlined to one governing body rather than the seven authorities including police and local councils who currently deal with noise complaint issues.

“The truth of the matter is that pub, or that nightclub or that live music venue has been there for many years, and it needs to be there for the years ahead,” Minns said.

New laws will also allow outdoor dining venues to make their most of their space as the outdoor application process is relaxed.

Additional incentives for venues to feature live music will also be incorporated.
The reforms were expected to be tabled to NSW parliament on 19 October.
