A master plan to transform Cockatoo Island has been unveiled by the Sydney Harbour Trust, which intends to turn the former convict jail into the “vibrant heart” of Sydney Harbour.

The plan includes high-end restaurants, a public swimming pool and hotel.

The Trust aims to turn the site into one of Australia’s “premium tourist spots”.
Public comment about the plans is open from today until December 13.

“Cockatoo Island (or) Wareamah is the jewel of Sydney Harbour, and our vision is to reconnect the island and its precincts into the cultural fabric of Sydney,” executive director Janet Carding said.

“Our aim is that by improving public access, and the range of experiences you can have, we can attract more to the site and establish the island as a place of significant local and international visitation.”

It is hoped the UNESCO World Heritage site attracts hundreds of thousands more visitors, particularly with plans for a former industrial building to be converted into a family friendly hotel.

“(The hotel) is a long-term proposal, consistent with statutory Management Plan and international precedent for a World Heritage place,’ the plan said.

“It will be developed in stages over 10 plus years as visitation to the island grows.”

A restaurant and cafe area is also expected to bolster tourism numbers.

“As a part of a wider food and beverage strategy implemented over time and in partnership to support growing visitor numbers and experiences across the island,” the plan said.”
