Josh and Julie Niland’s Sydney fish restaurant Saint Peter has been recognised in the longer list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants presentation.

The restaurant came in at number 98 at the ceremony in Las Vegas and this is the first stage of the annual global ranking. Restaurants 1-50 will be announced in Las Vegas on June 5.

Positions are decided by critics, chefs and well-travelled eaters.
Josh Niland is the Good Food Guide chef of the year and with wife, Julie has a big July coming up with the opening of the next “world-class” evolution of Saint Peter within The Grand National Hotel in Paddington.

Saint Peter will reopen with double the seating and kitchen capacity and diners will enjoy a three-part experience including especially grown oysters to be enjoyed at the bar, rotisserie-cooked seafood in the kitchen and the remaining courses of nine innovative courses served at the dining table.

While the Nilands need no excuse to praise their team, Josh took to Instagram following the award announcement to compliment them:

“@julieniland and I can’t begin to express our deepest most heartfelt congratulations to our whole team across @saintpeterpaddo, @fishbutchery & @petermendining. We are incredibly grateful to them and to @theworlds50bestfor recognising their efforts over the past years.”

The inclusion of Saint Peter in the awards puts Australia back on the radar after it missed representation last year. The inclusion follows backlash from critics who blamed the voting system for creating further distance between Australia and the northern hemisphere, claiming judges didn’t want to take long expensive flights.

Each academy member is required to vote for between six and 10 restaurants, with no more than six from the voter’s home region.

Australia was last represented in 2022, when Melbourne’s Gimlet and Cavendish House took spot 84.
