Would-be thief trips over cape as he escapes with nothing

A would-be thief, who tripped over his own camp as he fled the scene after a failed robbery attempt.

The man is alleged to have entered the Rex Hotel on Bay St in Port Melbourne about 2.15am on Wednesday May 22.

The armed man threatened staff with a firearm and demanded cash, which staff was unable to access.

The man became agitated and tripped on the cape he was wearing as he fled. He is said to have been wearing a dark material draped around him like a cape and a pair of dark-coloured underpants on his head. He was also wearing a black T-shirt, light-coloured pants and white runners.

The Armed Crime Squad is now appealing for public help to identify the man after failing to locate him during patrols of the area a short time later.

CCTV footage is now in circulation which shows the man leaving the venue. Police are asking any witnesses or people with dashcam footage to come forward.
