$104M hotel to rise near Sydney institution Golden Century
A new $104 million high-rise hotel will be built just 450 metres from Sydney institution Golden Century.
Anson Group, which is behind both properties, will build the new $16-storey after picking it up for $50 million.
The developer has received approval for a joint design by BVN and Architectus, that pays homage to some of the earliest buildings in Haymarket and Chinatown. The approved design includes six storeys of brick, intended to align with the Capitol Theatre's brick base and the aesthetic of many older buildings in the area.
The site will also feature a new laneway adjacent to a neighbouring substation.
“This will provide a view from Campbell Street through to Belmore Park, helping to break up the city,” BVN director Phillip Rossington said.
“It’s very challenging in the city now to even get a drop-off for a hotel due to stringent controls aimed at preserving footpaths.”
The hotel will be community-minded after an original design for a pool was removed.
“Most hotels are wanting to offer things to the whole city, not just to their guests. In fact 136 Hay Street, had a swimming pool on the Terrace at one point in development. That was taken away to make more provision for food and beverage,” he said.
Architectus principal Tim Moore acknowledged the challenges of designing a building adjacent to a park, explaining that the new hotel’s wedge shape was specifically developed to provide a sun access plane.
To compensate for the lost space due to this design, the building will include four basement levels, which have been approved for a supermarket, according to Architectus senior associate Jonathan Archibald.
“With that came its own challenges as the site is above the railway line so there was some pretty close consultation with councillors and Sydney Trains to really resolve that,” Archibald said.
