Patrolling police save Cairns waterfront restaurant from fire

A Cairns city restaurant has been saved from fire by patrolling police officers.

A fire broke out in the kitchen of the landmark Salt House restaurant, with emergency services quickly on scene to put out the blaze on the Cairns Esplanade.

“It looks like the fire started in the rangehood (kitchen equipment),” a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

“Crews are still on the ground making sure everything is safe.”

The fire was extinguished about 12.15pm yesterday.

Sergeant Lyall McKelvie noted how fortunate the restaurant was that police were patrolling the area at the time.

The officers noticed smoke coming from the venue and fought the blaze with extinguishers before QFES crews arrived.

“It started in the kitchen area and has gone up into the hob and the flu area and there was another second origin point up in there,” McKelvie said.

“(Firies) have got it all contained and are now doing the secondary check and I think the building was pretty empty.

“We were the first response at least that contained it for a little bit and definitely did reduce that first initial fire.”
