World’s 50 Best Hotels includes two Australian stunners

Two Australian hotels have been recognised among Traveller’s prestigious World’s 50 Best Hotels, underscoring the country’s growing reputation for high-end hospitality.

The Calile in Brisbane and The Tasman in Hobart are the two Australian entries on the list in the coveted World’s 50 Best Hotels list, with The Calile standing out as the Best Hotel in Oceania for the second consecutive year.

Brisbane’s The Calile, an urban resort operated by TFE Hotels, ranks at No. 25 for 2024 and despite slipping from its impressive No. 12 spot last year, the hotel remains a leading player in Australia’s luxury hotel scene.

Located in the vibrant James Street precinct, The 175-room Calile has a unique architectural style, combining brutalist design with 1950s aesthetics. Designed by Richards and Spence, the hotel features a striking white-brick facade and interiors with polished concrete and a sun-drenched palette of golds, soft sages, sandy tones, and pastel blues and pinks.

Calile co-owner Catherine Malouf, who attended the London ceremony, said: “To have been selected two years in a row marks a significant affirmation of The Calile’s place on the global hotel industry stage.

“This is a win for our team, our collaborators, our loyal guests and a win for Brisbane as a destination, and we are humbled to again represent Australia and be recognised as leading in the Oceania region.”

TFE Hotels is set to further enhance its presence in the Australian hospitality scene with the upcoming opening of The Eve, a luxury boutique hotel in Sydney’s Redfern.

Scheduled to open in November 2024, The Eve is poised to become one of the city’s most anticipated new properties, featuring a rooftop pool and dining experiences led by the acclaimed Liquid & Larder group.

Meanwhile, Hobart’s The Tasman, a newcomer to the list, secured the No. 49 spot.

Operated by Marriott, The Tasman has earned widespread praise, including a perfect score from Traveller, making its debut on the global stage a significant achievement.

Situated in Tasmania’s capital, the hotel combines heritage architecture with modern luxury, offering a distinct and immersive experience for visitors to the island state.

In a global context, The Calile and The Tasman stand alongside elite hotels worldwide, from Capella Bangkok, which took the top spot, to Italy’s Passalacqua, which was ranked second after taking out the number one ranking in 2023.
