Shout ends as Kalkarindji sticks with light beer

Kalkarindji sticks with light beer The full-strength beer tap is officially being turned off at the Northern Territory community of Kalkarindji, on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert.

The licensee of the community's social club has withdrawn a legal appeal against restrictions on its service of alcohol.

The Victoria Daly Shire Council holds the licence for the social club at Kalkarindji, 480 kilometres south-west of Katherine.

It had lodged an objection to a Licensing Commission ban on the sale of full-strength beer.

But the Council says the community now supports the restriction, so it has withdrawn the appeal.

The Council says the decision will save thousands of dollars in legal fees, which it will use instead on club improvements.

It says it supports the arrangements being reviewed in 12 months.

The neighbouring Top Springs Hotel will still fight proposed restrictions on its takeaway liquor license.
