Police get tough on pub breaches

Police say they are meeting licensees in Cairns today to crack down on breaches in the city's pubs and nightclubs.

Far northern police detected 161 liquor breaches during Operation Unite at the weekend.

Inspector Jim Plowman says specialist liquor licensing police brought up from Surfers Paradise for the blitz have raised concerns about some of the venues' practices.

"We're having a meeting at the police station with the people in the liquor accord to try to work with them to tighten up some of the areas where they are a bit deficient in, probably a lot of intoxicated people on licensed premises," he said.

"That's probably a bit out of kilter with what the south-east corner normally has, failing to fill out security registers properly.

"Which is quite important for us because we often rely on them for evidence in court.

"Some of the clubs' licensing conditions have noise restrictions on them and they're supposed to monitor noise levels at hourly intervals for example and a couple of those weren't complying with that, so we'll be working through those issues with them."
