New Muswellbrook motel approved

Plans for a new motel in Muswellbrook will proceed, with council giving the project the go-ahead.

The 54 room motel on Maitland Street will feature a contemporary style and include a car park for almost 60 vehicles.

The development will require the demolition of three existing homes and was approved at this week's Muswellbrook Shire council meeting.

Nearby residents had raised objections, citing privacy, traffic and noise concerns.

The applicant, Repinski Proprietary Limited has responded by agreeing to install a 1.8 metre fence along its boundaries, as well a landscape strip and shrubs.

Councillors moved an amendment requiring the builders create an easement, giving access to Muscle Creek for vegetation maintenance.

They also decided that the front fence of the motel should be black.

Council says the motel will contribute to the diversity of short-term accommodation within Muswellbrook and is likely to provide local employment.

There is a strong demand for accommodation in Muswellbrook, especially among the population of miners working in the surrounding coal fields.
