Listeria scare for Binnorie Dairy

A Hunter Valley cheese manufacturer has dodged a bullet after a listeria infection in one of its award-winning cheeses was found to be below dangerous levels.

Binnorie Dairy says it discovered the bacteria in its Duetto cheese with the best-before date of February 21, on Wednesday this week.

By that time a small batch of 46 tubs of cheese had already been sold but the company put an immediate stop on sales and is recalling the product.

Listeria can cause illness is pregnant women, the elderly and those with poor immune systems.

Subsequent testing of the Duetto cheese found the levels of listeria detected are very low and unlikely to cause sickness.

Binnorie says it is relieved but has still stopped all manufacture on that cheese's production line and is testing to find the source of the infection.
