Woman injured by couch thrown from pub balcony

A woman is being treated for spinal injuries after she was hit by a couch thrown from the internal balcony of a pub in the New South Wales city of Tamworth.

Police say the two-seater lounge was thrown about six metres from the first floor of the Good Companion Hotel about 10:00pm (AEDT) on Friday.

It struck a 42-year-old woman below, giving her spinal injuries.

She was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital before being flown to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.

Two men were arrested soon afterwards at the nearby Central Hotel.

A 32-year-old man from Ballina, on the NSW North Coast, and a 27-year-old man from Varsity Lakes, on the Gold Coast, have both been charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company.

Acting Inspector James Parsons, from Oxley Local Area Command, says police and paramedics were called to the scene.

"The patron was in a downstairs area of the hotel with friends and the lounge appears to have struck them to the head and shoulder areas," he said.

"Our officers estimate the actual fall of the couch was somewhere between five and six metres and police managed to track the two offending males to another nearby hotel and at that location they were both placed under arrest.

The pair have been refused bail.

They'll appear before Tamworth Local Court on Monday.
