The way to a tourist is through their stomach

A New South Wales far south coast business group says a new tourism event will boost visitor numbers to the region.

The Merimbula Chamber of Commerce is staging the “Eat Merimbula” food festival on Sunday.

The Chamber's President, Natalie Godward, says a variety of local produce will be cooked to create gourmet meals for visitors.

She says the event will strengthen Merimbula's long-term economy.

"I think the financial benefits are probably more on a long-term basis,” Ms Godward said.

“There will of course be financial benefits on the weekend with visitors coming to the area.

“We're hoping that it'll attract visitors to the area for this event as well and that'll just boost the local economy regardless because they'll be spending in the town, they'll be booking for accommodation."
