Uncertainty surrounds camel abattoir site

Doubts regarding whether a camel abattoir will be built near Port Pirie have surfaced, with another nearby council approached about the development.

The Mallala Council says it has been approached by a consultant for the developer Magdiens Australia about whether it might host the $15 million abattoir.

The Port Pirie Regional Council approved a development application for an abattoir at Warnertown in September 2011.

Magdiens Australia has until October this year to do substantial work on the site or the approval will be withdrawn.

Port Pirie Mayor Brenton Vanstone says he is almost certain the project will not be based in his region.

"Personally, I'm feeling very disappointed but at this current stage I'm not feeling confident about the project," he said.

"The development application goes with the land, not the person, and so we believe that we have the site there that's open for investment."

The Mallala Council says no decisions will be made without further information.
