Fast-food dispute to delay Woolies opening

Delays in the Woolworths development at Margaret River have pushed back the planned March opening until at least the middle of the year.

The delay is linked to a proposal, put to the Augusta-Margaret River Shire by developers, to merge two tenancies to house a fast-food outlet.

Many locals voiced concerns that fast food would cheapen the Margaret River brand, despite several other fast-food outlets already operating in the town.

The council approved the fast-food tenancy but voted to impose a number of conditions on the proposal in December last year.

The shire has confirmed Woolworths is disputing some of the conditions but says it cannot disclose details.

The opening of the complex is now expected to occur in June or July.
