Two-up returns to Broken Hill

Two-up is returning to the Palace Hotel in Broken Hill this weekend.

The game was first played by Australian servicemen at Gallipolli, and Broken Hill is now one of only two places in Australia where it can be played legally.

Owner Esther La Rovere says the hotel finally received confirmation they had been granted a permanent licence to run two-up this week.

She says the game should attract tourists to the hotel tonight and tomorrow.

"Especially sort of thinking about the history of it," she said.

"People are attracted to the building anyway and sort of hanging around hoping to meet locals and have an interesting time so it's certainly one of the things they will enjoy with their time there."

Esther La Rovere says tourists and locals will be playing two-up in the same spot Australian servicemen played the game.

"We will be operating two-up in the Pavilion room, which is out big room in the middle there with the lantern roof, so lots of height for people to toss a coin," she said.

"And I'm sure one of the spots that the old Returned Servicemen did when the Palace was the Returned Servicemen's Home."
