Byron pub owners introduce tougher drinking rules

Pub owners have decided to introduce tougher measures into Byron hotels in an attempt to curb the town's alcohol-related crime.

This follows a meeting with senior figures from the Australian Hoteliers Association, licensees, and police yesterday.

Head of AHA New South Wales, Paul Nicolaou, says there will be a six month trial that involves a 1:30 am lockout, and refusal of entry to any person seen drinking within 50 metres of a venue.

"There will be no double spirits and no jugs of alcohol at anytime and no cocktails after midnight," said Mr Nicolaou.

"We will also put pressure on the State Government to provide funds to install CCTV in Byron Bay's Central Business District to improve security at night," he said.

The trial starts this weekend and will end in September.
