Turkey plant workers sacked over mistreatment

Five workers have been sacked at a commercial bird handling plant after animals were mistreated.

The ABC's Lateline program this week broadcast footage of staff at an Inghams plant at Tahmoor, south-west of Sydney, bashing and kicking live turkeys.

In a statement on Friday, Inghams CEO Kevin McBain said five employees have been dismissed and an investigation into the incident was continuing.

"We want to again reassure you that Inghams does not tolerate the mistreatment of our livestock," the statement read.

The company added the installation of video monitoring in the live bird handling areas would be completed over the course of the weekend.
