The big bake-off

Canberra cake makers are invited to enter a centenary cake competition run by the Griffith Narrabundah Community Association. From what we can gather, you can cook essentially whatever you like in what appears to be a refreshingly rule-free contest.

“There are no fussy rules,” organisers declare. “We want you to bake something interesting and fun and that tastes good. You are free to design and bake whatever creation you wish.  Kids can decorate a biscuit for example.”

Shane Rattenbury MLA will oversee the bake-off.

There will, though, be “esteemed judges who are experienced cake eaters and have a good eye for stylish presentations”, and don’t think you can focus only on how it looks. You need to bake an actual cake, and the judges will taste it. The judges are the father of the owner of D’Browes restaurant in Narrabundah, Deryk Browes; Canberra Times social writer Lyn Mills; and Todd Wright, from Threesides Marketing, with oversight from Greens Assembly Member Shane Rattenbury.

The contest is part of the association’s centenary celebration, with a street party hosted by M16 Artspace in Blaxland Crescent on Saturday, May 18, where the cakes will be judged. There will also be art exhibitions, a dedication for Blaxland Park, and music. Enter in one of four categories – adult homebake; professional; high school, college and Tafe; or primary and preschool – at gnca.org.au.
