Historic pub destroyed by fire

The owner of a pub in Queensland's Central Highlands destroyed by fire overnight says the region has lost an important part of history.

Fire broke out in the Queen's Arms Hotel in Springsure south of Emerald late last night.

The historic pub has been licensed since 1880 but the building itself is even older.

Owner Sandy Grayson says the single storey building containing the bar has been destroyed.

The double storey accommodation section has survived but some rooms have fire and water damage.

Ms Grayson says her husband helped fire officers hose down their residence to stop the flames spreading.

She says six or seven generations of Springsure residents have drunk at the pub, and an important piece of history has gone up in smoke.

Ms Grayson says it is too early to say if she will be able to rebuild.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
