Pub chefs battle it out

The steak sandwich is up there with the chicken parmigiana as a staple on country pub menus - and five regional chefs will compete in a cook-off to determine whose version is best.

Chef Jodie Brockman's chilli jam steak burger at the Broken Hill Hotel in Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a finalist in the Australian Hotels Association WA's best country pub steak sandwich awards.

She said her creation was an instant favourite.

"It is definitely an honour to be nominated in the State awards," she said. "Every pub in the State does a steak sandwich so to have mine rated in the top five makes me very proud."

The other finalists are the Esplanade Hotel in Port Hedland, Murphy's Irish Pub in Mandurah, Southerlys Harbour View Bar & Restaurant in Port Denison and the Bridgetown Hotel.

Broken Hill hotel owner Arlene Mackay said the nomination was testament to the work she and her husband had put into the pub. The grand final cook-off will be held at the Hospitality Expo on May 14 at Crown Perth.
