Fire-hit historic hotel demolished

Engineers have knocked down a 110-year-old hotel in Kalgoorlie, damaged by a suspicious fire, so detectives can enter the property and begin determining the cause of the blaze.

The fire started in the historic Golden Eagle Hotel on Lane Street early on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were unable to battle the blaze from inside the building due to structural damage caused by an earthquake in 2010.

Police say parts of the building were in danger of collapsing.

They say they will enter the site once the property has been declared safe.
