Court hears trifle dessert packed a punch

A court has heard "jelly-shots" seized by undercover liquor officials in Newcastle were not being sold, but instead were served with a dessert.

The Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing has charged Newcastle licensee Novac Pearce with five offences relating to the undesirable promotion of liquor in 2009.

Undercover liquor inspectors went to the Kavon Restaurant in Hamilton owned by Ms Pearce after concerns were raised about the sale of "jelly shots" and a six shot cocktail known as a "poison punch".

Several shot glasses were seized from a bar fridge and today Joan Pearce the licensee's mother, told Newcastle Court they were not being sold but instead were served with a trifle dessert.

She said the dessert was deemed too sweet and only served on one weekend, but the prosecution has argued many witnesses supporting Ms Pearce were inconsistent in the extreme.
