University's hotel school thinks big

Darwin's new business school is to become a regional international hospitality hub and eventually have more than 1000 students.

The Charles Darwin University-run school will be in a four-storey building at the Waterfront after an agreement with Toga, which owns a string of hotels.

It is expected to soon receive backing from a major national hospitality training company.

University vice-chancellor Barney Glover, who has already initiated an oil and gas training centre and a Chinese language school, said: "This will help put Darwin on the map and diversify the Northern Territory economy."

He said Territory hotels and restaurants were "crying out" for qualified staff.

The business school will eventually cover courses from certificate III to PhD.

Students will train in everything from baristas to chefs, from reception workers to hotel managers.
