Golf club's new owner airs 'eco villas' plan

The new owner of the Waikerie Golf Club says she wants to increase on-site accommodation to attract more players from outside the region.

Local businesswoman Julie Steiner says she will construct a number of 'eco villas' on the site and working with local businesses to develop the facility.

The club has been on the market for about 18 months after it began to struggle financially and was handed over to the Waikerie Hotel-Motel.

Ms Steiner says she is looking forward to the challenge.

"We'll start with the clubhouse and build a great, big wrap-around deck, which I think everyone would love sitting out there with a nice glass of local wine," she said.

"But the eco villas - we're going to have them actually designed, so that should attract a different type of the person to the region - something unique."

She says she has already spoken to other local businesses in the area about how they can work together.

"We're going to work closely with them, particularly with the local wines," she said.

"I believe locals should work together, locals really do know the area the best and we know where to send people for great places to eat and drink.

"I just think it's important for the area that locals do work together."
