NSW beekeepers struggling to make honey

Beekeepers in New South Wales are reporting a horrendous year for honey production.

Yetholme beekeeper Malcolm Porter says some of his bees have died from starvation because of a lack of nectar to feed on.

He says it means securing hives near canola or patches of weed will be competitive this year.

"About a hundred bees we lost over the holiday period," he said.

"I don't believe there is going to be a great deal of honey produced out of eucalypts.

"It's what I call a weed year this year, where you get Paterson's Curse, capeweed, canola.

"They all produce a certain amount of nectar or honey."
