Judges dish out top food honours at RQFWS

A spicy plum sorbet and a "technically perfect'' chilli and orange chocolate have curried favour with judges to scoop honours as Australia's best ice cream and chocolate at the RNA's annual produce competition.

Victoria's Jindi Cheese also nabbed the title of grand champion, named Australia's best cheese for a second year running, with its Old Telegraph Heritage Blue.

Since Monday, May 14, Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show (RQFWS) judges have sniffed, licked and chewed their way through 640 chocolates, ice creams and dairy goods at the RNA in the first of eight RQFWS competitions designed to spotlight the nation's best.

The cinnamon, clove and plum sorbet from The Bellingen Gelato Bar in NSW was crowned grand champion ahead of 131 ice other cream and sorbet entries from across Australia.

Adelaide chocolatier Bracegirdles’ Equador Chilli and Orange Chocolate which took top honours in the RQFWS first ever chocolate competition was deemed an "outstanding example of artisan craftsmanship'' by chief judge Russell Smith, who said entries had exceeded expectations.

Last year's winner of Australia's best ice cream, former Olympic pole vaulting champion, Tatiana Grigorieva of Hamilton's Gelato Milany again featured on the winners podium. Her Racecourse Rd business creamed six gold medals for its gelato.
