TV chef appointed to spruik local food and wine

An award-winning television chef from Hong Kong has been recruited as South Australia's first overseas-based food and wine ambassador by the State Government.

Wong Wing Chee joins 17 local identities, including Penfolds chief wine maker Peter Gago and chef Simon Bryant, as an ambassador in a bid to promote local produce and boost sales in Asia.

Mr Wong has won the Chinese version of cooking show 'Iron Chef' three times.

Agriculture Minister Gail Gago says it is hoped his high-profile will help South Australian food and wine reach new markets.

"Chef Wong has a weekly television audience of millions of people and is well known and really highly regarded right throughout China and Hong Kong and other parts of the world as well," she said.

"He's obviously ideally placed to share the message of an excellent standard of products that South Australia has to offer.

"He's got a very strong relationship with Australia, he spends a lot of time in South Australia and he's brought a number of delegations. South Australia's competitive edge is the fact that we have premium quality primary products and we have a very clean environment."
