Responsible service of alcohol measures by hotels on track

A survey of young adults showing more responsible service of alcohol in licensed premises shows that proactive measures by hoteliers are working,
AHA (NSW) CEO Paul Nicolaou said.

Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) survey results released today indicate there has been a significant jump in the proportion of
intoxicated people refused service for intoxication (up from 2.2% to 7.1%) and also a rise in the number of intoxicated people asked to leave licensed premises (up from 4.2% to 12.4%).

The results are from a survey conducted by BOCSAR of about 2,500 young adults in 2011 – an identical survey was conducted in 2006 and 2002.
Mr Nicolaou said it showed community perceptions of irresponsible service and excessive consumption of alcohol on licensed premises was dropping.
“This survey confirms what statistics have told us for some time,” he said.

“Pro-active measures by hoteliers are paying off and the message of personal responsibility is finally sinking in to patrons.

“Incidents of alcohol-related anti-social behaviour on licensed premises are at the lowest levels in a decade. Just last week in the Sydney CBD we saw
that alcohol-related anti-social behaviour had dropped almost 30% in a year in the City North Liquor Accord area.

“It is pleasing to see the latest BOCSAR survey but hoteliers will continue to work to ensure the message gets across to those few people doing the wrong thing – anti-social behaviour and intoxication will not be tolerated on licensed premises.”

Mr Nicolaou also welcomed recent moves by the State Government to crack down on under-age drinking.
