Expressions of interest called for Empire Hotel site

Expressions of interest are being called for an affordable housing project on the site of the former Empire Hotel in Hunter Street, Newcastle.

Expressions of interest are being called for an affordable housing project on the site of the former Empire Hotel in Newcastle.

The State Government is contributing land for the Hunter Street development while Newcastle Council is putting in almost $3 million from the Building Better Cities Trust Fund.

The 2 thousand square metre site's zoning allows residential, commercial, hotel or mixed use development with proponents required to deliver a minimum of 17 studio or one-bedroom units.

Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Craig Baumann says says development will assist in the rejuvenation of the CBD.

"The site is somewhat of an eyesore," he said.

"This will provide affordable housing.

"It will get activity and movement there in Newcastle West.

"Combined with the $580 million the State Government has allocated to try and rejuvenate the city of Newcastle this is a great initiative."
