No place like Adelaide when it comes to food: Architect Greg Bond shares top spots to eat, drink

TALENTED architect Greg Bond has designed his way around the globe but is relishing being back in his home town.

Greg, 41, runs a thriving design practice — Atelier Bond — and is married to journalist Leisha. The couple live at Goodwood with their baby daughter, Ruby, and golden retriever Atticus.

The duo moved to Dubai in 2006 where Greg worked on lavish large-scale projects taking him around the Middle East and Europe.

“I went from designing townhouses here to my first project in Dubai which was worth $1.3 billion, it was a surreal experience, and I think I fast-tracked a 20-year career development in three years,” he says.

The couple also lived in San Francisco before returning to SA in 2010.

“We love it, Adelaide is the greatest place to come home to,” Greg says.

“It’s great to get away and have all the adventures but to come back and re-establish a proper life, there is no city better.”

Greg is currently focusing on residential design projects which he’s loving for the connection he’s able to make with clients.

“It’s very different, much more personal, designing homes for people rather than working on commercial projects,” he says.

Here’s his top picks from the city:

Pizza e Mozzarella Bar, 33 Pirie St

GREG’S been a big fan of this Italian gem since it first opened in 2012.

“I love sitting at the front window with one of their amazing pizzas, a glass of red and then a coffee,” he says. “It’s pretty hard to beat the classic Margherita topped with good-tasting tomatoes, cheese and basil.”

Greg also recommends the shared plate of salumi, prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella and wood oven bread.

CHEF Duncan Welgemoed’s latest restaurant — an ode to his homeland of South Africa — is a new favourite of Greg’s. “I was impressed, the food was really interesting and it’s quite a sophisticated experience,” he says. “I thought maybe being South African food it may end up being just a big piece of meat on the plate but it was so different to that. It’s not a novelty restaurant but something new and worthwhile for Adelaide.”

THIS city hotspot — with chef Stewart Wesson at the helm — was named Best Cafe in the 2015 Advertiser Food Awards.

“The fitout here is fantastic and the coffee is mind-blowing,” Greg says.

Brekkie dishes include poached eggs, avocado and lime, haloumi and ciabatta while lunch treats include slow-cooked lamb shoulder with labne, pomegranate and fennel salad.
