Clareville Kiosk up for Gault & Millau best new restaurant award

Clareville Kiosk’s Nathan Boler. The restaurant is one of five restaurants up for Gault & Millau's best new restaurant of the year.

Clareville Kiosk is competing with the big boys.

The mod Oz restaurant is vying for best new restaurant in Gault & Millau’s inaugural restaurant awards.

The impressive line up of nominees includes Bennelong and Firedoor at Surry Hills, restaurateur Nathan Bowler said.

“We’re up against Bennelong and Firedoor, there are some pretty big names on the list, we’re small fry, so it’s kind of cool,” Nathan Bowler said.

Finalists were presented with their awards at Gault & Millau’s Mise en Place Sydney trade event late last month.

The award is open to restaurants which have less than a year old, or redeveloped or under new management. Clareville Kiosk falls into the latter category

Mr Bowler and head chef Rob Rietveld took over ownership of the Clareville restaurant in July.

Both bring extensive high-end experience to the northern beaches.

“We’ve both worked in pretty swish places,” he said.

“But that’s not what we are doing, we are simplifying fine dining so that it is approachable and affordable.”

“We are doing a new dish a week, and we have had a great reception from locals,” he said.

Yeasted cauliflower, curry mayonnaise and granny smith apple has become a talking point, he said.

Clareville Kiosk is open for lunch from Thursday to Sunday and for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday nights. Wednesday night is BYO.

Gault & Millau Australia Guide will announce all winners in its third restaurant guide.

Publication date for the Sydney and Melbourne guide is November.
