Gold Coast restaurants aim to be known for high end dining

THE Glitter Strip is about to get just a little more shiny as restaurants lift their expectations ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Premium champagne brand Veuve Clicquot for the first time chose the Gold Coast for the Queensland launch its new product Rich this week snubbing their previous event hosts Brisbane.

Southeast Queensland account manager Archie Cox said Mamasan Kitchen and Bar in Broadbeach was the perfect location to pop the new champagne, which is served over ice after being infused through tea or cucumbers and capsicum.

“From Veuve Clicquot’s point of view we see the Gold Coast as a great market emerging more and more in the high end arena,” Mr Cox said.

“I think the Gold Coast has some of Australia’s leading chefs from the restaurants at the casino to the Fish House and obviously Mamasan.

“They’re restaurants we see as cutting edge.”

Palazzo Versace general manager Subash Basrur, whose hotel redefined luxury on the Coast when it opened 15 years ago, said he wasn’t surprised by Veuve’s decision.

“The Gold Coast is moving at breakneck speed at the moment. It is definitely in tune with what’s happening everywhere and getting ready for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Basrur said.

“The city is a flurry of activity. It’s already started with the real estate prices going up and in our neck of the woods we’ve got three significant developments.

“We’re the playground of people who enjoy fine things.”

But it’s not all caviar and gold cutlery that makes a high end dining experience.

Mr Basrur said Gold Coast restaurants needed to be innovative, pointing out a venture at the Palazzo when Opera Queensland singers performing in the lobby.

“We call it ‘experience beyond expectations’,” he said. “It could be a taste experience, or the scent we waft through corridors — that’s how luxury properties take it to the next level.”
