Sydney restaurant barons hedge against Mike Baird's bloody tram

We know it'll be great when it is done. But for now the Sydney central business district resembles Dante's Inferno, thanks to that bloody tram.

So can you blame the harbour city's restaurant barons for diversifying? Machiavelli Ristorante is opening another spot at Kerrie Mather's airport. No less than the chairman of the Australian Republican Movement, Peter Fitzsimons, is launching the new joint on Wednesday evening.

Even the Human Ponytail is hedging. Neil Perry, just back in the country after a trip to the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham, is about to release a new Omega line of cooking equipment.

"Hearing them sing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was amazing," rugby union aficionado Perry told us on Tuesday. And apparently the kitchen stuff isn't bad either.

The line will be launched at the Rockpool mothership on Bridge Street, also on Wednesday evening – one day after Mike Baird's city construction project began.  A coincidence?
