An overhaul for the Rottnest Island hotel

by Leon Gettler

The Hotel Rottnest is about to undergo its biggest overhaul in its 160-plus year history

The place will be transformed with plans to build 80 villas on the site, many with private plunge pools and terraces.

The villas will be a mix of single and two-storey accommodation.

The focal point for the development will be the big feature pool.

The massive redevelopment will also include a conference and function area for up to 400 delegates.

Work is expected to begin on the project at the start of 2019.

A heads of agreement has been signed with the Prendiville Group to build a poolside resort, spa and function centre.

It will sit on 8800 square metres of vacant land behind and south of the existing hotel.

As part of the deal, the state government has extended the group’s lease on the site by 50 years to 2087.

“It will be an exceptional standard of accommodation catering to couples, families, corporates and international tourists,” Prendiville Group chief operating officer Tony Dichiera told the West Australian.

“We want to see Rottnest remain competitive with international destinations and ensure Western Australians holiday close to home.”

Tourism Minister Kim Hames told the West Australian that the revamped hotel will attract more visitors to the island during winter. It would also expand the accommodation range at the site.

“The Prendiville Group has a proved track record in the provision of high- quality commercial food and beverage operations on Rottnest and has shown great enthusiasm to make a further long-term commitment to their business presence on the island,” Mr Hames said.

The hotel at Rottnest Island has a unique history. The hotel was originally constructed in 1858 as the official summer residence of the WA Governor. It was converted into hotel accommodation in 1919. It opened as a hotel in 1853.
