Penfolds named the world’s most admired wine brand

Penfolds has scored a big international win and has been named the world’s most admired wine brand by Drinks International in its annual poll.

It’s a significant development for Penfolds which is the core brand of Treasury Wine Estates.

The vote was taken by almost 200 industry experts from across the world.

Buyers, sommeliers, wine writers, Masters of Wine, and wine critics took part in the vote on the weekend.

The competition assesses wine brands from all global regions, styles and qualities.

Judges have to vote on certain criteria including the consistent quality of the brand’s wine, how well it reflects the region or country of origin, and its appeal to a wide demographic.

This latest award comes on top of the honour for 1971 Grange, which was last year named the world’s best wine from the 1970’s by FINE magazine.

It is also in addition to Penfolds being named International White Winemaker of the Year, by the International Wine Challenge in 2015.

And the Winery of the Year' award was presented to Penfolds for the 25th year in a row by Wine & Spirits magazine in late 2015 – a world first Spanish wine Torres, which had won the most admired wine brand award twice, came in second and Ridge Vineyards from the US took third. Australia’s Jacob’s Creek also got a place on the list.

“All at Penfolds are so chuffed with this global recognition – from those working in our vineyards and wineries, on our bottling lines, back-of-house in logistics, procurement and marketing, to our talented sales teams,” said Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, Peter Gago in a press release.

“After 172 years in the wine business we’re still hungry, still excited and still eager to make better wine and champion new followers.”

It is also good news for Treasury Wine Estates which posted a 42 per cent rise in profit to $60.6 million for the half year.
