Lotus Leaf Buns by Hakka

Fine Dining

Australia’s dining scene is shifting with news of some of the most iconic fine dining restaurants closing up shop recently as we observe a dramatic move in dining culture. There has been a preference towards a more casual and relaxed environment at a more user-friendly price point with a focus on quality. Eating out has evolved over the years and the need for stretching our weekly budget over as many nights as possible can be seen in the recent consumer report Eating Out in Australia 2017 which found we are eating out more often with an average of 2-3 days a week but spending less on average per visit (Intermedia Group, Eating Out in Australia 2017 – Fast Food to Fine Dining – State of the Industry, 2017)

Australians are always looking for something exciting and new to stimulate their taste buds and with such accessibility to social media and its platform of sharing images, opinions and reviews, diners are now extremely spoilt for choice. This strong influence on diners means the internet is constantly helping to set new food trends locally and internationally. The move towards more affordable, quality experiences has seen a rise in the popularity of night markets, food trucks, upmarket fast food and high quality casual dining, which has put the spotlight on the ‘bao’ (an Oriental soft taco-style bun also known as “Lotus Leaf Buns” or “Gua Bao”) sensation that is sweeping across Australia.

These soft, fluffy buns are originally a Taiwanese street food filled with delicious savoury or sweet fillings, made famous in the west by New York’s Momofuku. International fame has brought this dish to Australia, and can now be seen in the local bar, restaurant, function and casual dining scene with a number of specialist bao venues also popping up.

Hakka have helped drive this trend with its fantastic range of Lotus Leaf Buns (Gua Bao) available in 2 varieties:

Options for fillings are endless with Lotus Leaf Buns going perfectly with fillings of all kinds whether they have Asian, Western or fusion influences.

For those not set on their own for recipes fillings, Hakka’s mouth-watering Chicken karaage (Japanese Crispy Chicken) or sticky Teriyaki Chicken are essential complimentary ingredients. For a cool dessert option this summer, experiment with fruit, Nutella and green tea ice cream!
