Brisbane’s Kookaburra Café to close its doors

Kookaburra Cafe

The big news in Brisbane is that the Kookaburra Café, something of an institution, is finally closing its doors after 35 years.

But it will re-open.

The former chef and manager of the popular eatery for the past 34 years Patrick Vines has bought the place. The owner Steve Hall is moving to Western Australia to work with his veterinarian sons.

Mr Vines is planning to relocate it.

And he’s not taking very far either.

In fact, he will just be moving the business across the road in Paddington and joining up with board game and bar eatery Club Sosay.

It will be located on the corner of Latrobe and Given Tce.

The name for the new place will be Club Sosay Kookaburra Café, something you would expect when two businesses join forces.

And the new venue will continue to serve the Kookaburra signature menu of pizza, burgers, pasta and mains. The most popular snacks from Club Sosay will also be on the menu.

“It’s going to be a new approach with the board games they’ve got going on over there,” Mr Vines  “People can come have some pizza and play games if they want to. We’ll have a bigger bar with more drinks, more wine specials, and heaps of cocktails.”

Meanwhile, the hardware store next door to the Kookaburra will take over the existing site.

“We’re so happy that we can continue the legacy that Steve set up all those years ago,” Club Sosay owner Debbie Seipel told the Courier Mail.

“We’re a fairly new business and Kookaburra Cafe is an old business so to bring those two together is really great.”

Today is the first day for the merged venture. The menu for now is limited but within the next fortnight, it will take full flight.

The Club Sosay Kookaburra Café will be open seven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with seating for up to 70.
