Aussies make World’s Best Restaurants

So now it’s official – there are two Aussie restaurants ranked in the World’s Top 50

Australia will have a place for the first time in four years when the international rankings are announced in Melbourne next week on April 5.

The top restaurants will include Ben Shewry’s Attica in Ripponlea, as always and for the first time, Dan Hunter’s Brae in Birregurra, 130km southwest of Melbourne,

Both restaurants are in Victoria.

It’s a big achievement for Brae which came in at number 65 last year. Brae debuted at 87 in 2015 so it’s definitely on the way up.

The last time Australia had two restaurants ranked in the prestigious awards recognising the world’s hottest eateries was in 2013.

At the time, Attica and Quay in Sydney were on the list.

Quay has faded since then. This time it has come in at number 95. Singapore’s Burnt Ends, run by Perth-raised chef David Pynt, came in at 53.

The rankings will be revealed after the awards’ organisers announced the supplementary list of restaurants from all over the world ranked 51-100 for 2017.

And what it might be an acknowledgment of Australia’s place in the world of cuisine, it will only be the second time the awards will be held outside of London.

And for those who can’t come along, Federation Square will have the live countdown on the big screen on the night. There will also be entertainment and food trucks.

The list is created from votes of more than 1000 food writers, critics, chefs and restaurateurs around the world.

They base choices on their best restaurant experiences of the past 18 months.

“As well as showcasing emerging talent and highlighting new culinary trends, this group also features perennial favourites that demonstrate enduring quality,” said Group Editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, William Drew, via a statement. “Overall, the list reflects of the diversity, promise and excitement surrounding global gastronomy.”
