Tabcorp clubs deal counters Crownbet

Tabcorp has announced an exclusive wagering deal with more than 1100 pubs and hotels in New South Wales aimed at stopping James Packer’s online betting service Crownbet extending its partnership with clubs across the state.

The Tabcorp deal comes after Crownbet reached its deal in February to provide exclusive wagering services to 1200 clubs across NSW which sees Crownbet providing WiFi and encouraging punters to place their bets using a special wagering app. The Crownbet deal also involves “cash-in-cash-out” machines allowing people to get their money on winning bets.

The Tabcorp deal involves 1116 AHA members across the state nominating Tabcorp as their exclusive wagering partner.

It will see pubs receiving a commission for bets placed at their venues on the TAB app. It will offer the same rate as when the bets are placed in cash.

This is similar to the model Tabcorp released in Victoria and the ACT after trialling it in Canberra last year.

According to Tabcorp, pubs accounted for about $1.6 billion in annual turnover for the group.

Tabcorp says it will also drive increased investment in retail facilities to better service venues and the many customers choosing to bet in a NSW hotel.

The deal targets changing customer preferences with betting habits shifting towards more punting via smart phones and tablets.

Tabcorp chief executive David Attenborough it was important for hotels to pick up revenue in a way that reflects the changing nature of the way punters place bets.

“We are pleased to reach this agreement with the AHA NSW and its member hotels. Having a bet in a pub is an Australian social tradition and this partnership helps us and our venues to deliver the best wagering experience,” Mr Attenborough said in a statement.

“At the same time, we are making sure pubs benefit no matter how customers choose to bet within the venue.”
