M&L’s hotel plans for Sydney’s CBD

Singapore-based M&L Hospitality has big plans for its hotel in Sydney’s CBD.

The company, controlled by Singapore's Kum family, is looking to create sheer classic elegance at its new-build hotel West Hotel at 65 Sussex Street in the Sydney CBD.

M&L is looking to launch the new "upper scale" hotel in December.

That will be after a year-long construction led by Multiplex.

The new hotel in Darling Harbour will be an addition to its other asset, Australia's biggest hotel, the Hyatt Regency which also happens to be in Sussex Street. All up, the group has 1443 hotel rooms across the city. That includes the newly refurbished Hyatt Regency and the five-star Swissotel on Market Street in the CBD.

The West Hotel is also situated close to Four Points by Sheraton Sydney and Barangaroo.

M&L chief executive Neil Maxwell says the development in hotel room starved Sydney is long overdue and will be a welcome addition.

"By all means we will build another hotel, we have now done a few buildings. With all the infrastructure work happening there's just a lot going on in the city," Mr Maxwell told the Australian Financial Review.

The West Hotel will have 182 guest rooms.

It will also feature four suites, an internal courtyard, meeting space, restaurant and bar.

There will also be a restaurant, The Dining Room by West Hotel. The focus will be on fine dining.

However, the company has yet to release details about what the restaurant will offer.

M&L has a specific market in mind for the West Hotel.

It wants to bring in the "Monday to Thursday" corporate market based around the Barangaroo precinct around the corner, and all the local retail travellers.

Why the name “West Hotel”?

It’s based on the western Sydney corridor location.

The hotel rates are expected be in the mid $200 a night range.
