Pop-up hub Contained to open on Cockatoo Island

Sydney’s Cockatoo Island will be getting a new pop-up hub Contained, opening on February 8.

It will be open right through to June.

Being a pop-up, it means the historic island will get a temporary bar, event space, urban farm, accommodation .restaurant and hotel.

Made from repurposed shipping containers, Contained will sit by the water’s edge at Cockatoo Island’s Bolt Wharf.

Contained is the creation of Anatoly Mezhov and Irene Polo. It was originally erected in Perth.

"We’re excited to bring this pop-up hub to Cockatoo Island and Sydney, which is an extension and a new take on our successful hub in Fremantle,” Mezhov told Food Service News.

"It’s an opportunity for people to escape to Cockatoo Island to experience great food, innovative farming and bespoke converted container structures, unwind and explore the Island’s incredible cultural and historical features."

The pop-up restaurant is Don Tapa.

And its menu is a creative mix of South American and indigenous Australian flavours.

All of that with ingredients picked fresh from the on-site urban farm.

At the bar, Urban Winery’s Alex Retief has created a selection of local NSW wines.

The drinks menu also includes craft beers from Young Henry's and cocktails using Archie Rose Distillery spirits.

Contained will also have a hotel, and this one is for adults.

The rooms will have views of Sydney Harbour.

Each room will feature a queen-sized bed, air conditioning, an exterior deck with lounge furniture, access to the Don Tapa Restaurant, room service and a shipping container, plunge pool.

People can check out the restaurant and take in the ambience or they can stay in and order room service.

There’s also a whole lot of events planned over the next few months.

These include a six-course Valentine's Day degustation and a series of guest chef dinners.

And of course, there’s the 21st Biennale of Sydney, running from May to June.
