Kalgoorlie institution Monty’s on the market

After 20 years of running Monty’s restaurant, owners Wayne and Jay Kemp have put their iconic Kalgoorlie restaurant up for lease at the end of October.

The restaurant at top end of Hannan Street operated 24 hours a day until a fire destroyed part of the building in 2015, forcing them to shut the business down for two years while undergoing repairs. It reopened last year.

Jay Kemp said the couple had hoped to sell the business last year after reopening with new trading hours but the deal fell through.

“We thought we would just get it up and running, get a year’s figures with the different trading hours and put it on the market,” she told thewest.com.au. “I’ve been here since 1996, that’s enough isn’t it?

The couple would maintain ownership of the building, leasing the business, which “was still very much turning a profit”, to someone new.

The menu is described as “normal, simple food” for a stable diner base of miners and tourists.

“Monty’s will sell itself. It’s a good restaurant, it has ambience,” she said.
