Chinese restaurant in Newtown to reopen after fire

The owners of a Chinese restaurant in Sydney’s Newtown have vowed to reopen it after a devastating fire over the weekend that saw two firefighters taken to hospital after being injured while fighting the blaze.

Emergency services were called to Happy Chef on King Street on Saturday night after 30 people were forced to evacuate the burning restaurant.

"There was one moment where it felt like you know, this is the backdraft or something happened or something exploded inside the roof space and it just lit up," witness Sebastian De Meza told Nine News.

The venue’s roof collapsed while 60 fire crew members were working to bring the fire under control. Fire crews believe the blaze may have started in the restaurant’s kitchen.
