Jewel development pushed back by injured workers

The Jewel development on the Gold Coast has suffered another setback following a workplace accident that saw three men rushed to hospital.

The accident occurred last Wednesday when a metal cable conduit, weighing about 3500kg, fell from three metres above the car park area where the men were working.

“One of the workers was trapped. His co-workers have been able to remove that [the conduit], which was quite good considering it weighs about 80 kilograms per metre so it certainly minimised his injuries,” Queensland Ambulance spokesperson Gavin Fuller told the Gold Coast Bulletin. “The other two workers were struck by it but not trapped underneath it.”

It is the second accident that has taken place on the site this year. In March, workers walked offsite over safety concerns following an incident that saw a worker crushed while working near an elevator shaft.

The development remains on track for completion in mid-2019.
