Record price paid for rare bottle of Penfolds wine

A record price has been paid for an Australian wine, with a 1951 vintage of Penfolds’ famous Grange Hermitage selling for $80,386.

The previous record was set in June at $78,000. There are believed to be less than 20 bottles of the sought after 1951 vintage left in the world.

Jeremy Parham, Langton's general manager, said the auction was not just for big spenders, but open to potential buyers of a variety of budgets.

“This auction had something for everybody, from potential bargains to rare vintages to a selection of unique bottles like the pristine 1951 Penfolds Grange,” he said.

A set of Grange from 1951 to 2013 also sold for an eye watering figure, with a buyer forking out just under $350,000 at the Langton's auction online.
