Nyabing locals step in to save their only pub

Locals in the WA town of Nyabing have rallied to save their only pub.

With a falling population, the Nyabing Community Hub was looking at closing down as its patrons moved away. But facing the thought of losing their only watering hole, locals rallied together and bought the run-down establishment using money raised in a community cropping program.

The Nyabing Progress Association used funds from the community cropping program, which raised nearly a million dollars, to save the pub.

Speaking to the ABC, association member Justin Germain said the pub was “slowly dying”.

"Farms have got bigger, there are fewer people, and we have a big generation gap,” he said.

"The pub had been on the market for a long time and there were no takers, so something had to be done."

Given the pub’s state of disrepair, the group decided to rebuild it from afresh with added features including a modern function room, office spaces, and short-term accommodation.

The new pub is now open for business.
