Footscray site for proposed shipping container hotel

Melbourne’s Footscray could be home to Australia’s first multi-storey shipping container hotel.

A vacant 6900sqm site south of Footscray railway station has been picked for the 215-room, six-storey hotel, which if approved would use 416 containers to create five blocks wrapped around a heritage-significant Moreton Bay fig tree.

Shops, offices and arts and crafts workshops are also part of the proposal lodged by town planning consultants Urbis on behalf of GPDG Pty Ltd, a company headed by developer George Ters.

The development will be in place for up to 15 years, then dismantled to make way for a more permanent use of the site.
